- Public Citizen Co-Presidents Request to Join DOGE by Newswire Editor (Common Dreams) on January 13, 2025 at 5:16 pm
Today, Public Citizen co-presidents Robert Weissman and Lisa Gilbert sent a letter to Trump transition co-chairs Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon requesting to be appointed as members of the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). If appointed, Weissman and Gilbert would bring to the table years of experience advocating for the interests of consumers and the public. “Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy both hold financial interests that will be directly affected by federal budgetary policies — presenting substantial conflict of interest concerns,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen. “Unlike Musk, neither Rob nor I, nor Public Citizen, has a financial interest in federal government contracts and spending. In bringing the consumer and public perspective to DOGE, we can offer views that are untainted by the appearance of corruption or self-dealing.” “All signs suggest the non-representative DOGE co-chairs aim to use ‘efficiency’ as a cover to drive a pro-corporate, anti-regulatory agenda and an ideologically driven social service cuts program. This would constitute an anti-efficiency agenda,” said Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen. “On the other hand, Lisa and I are prepared to offer a range of evidence-based efficiency proposals – to slash drug prices, end privatized Medicare, reduce the wasteful Pentagon budget – that would save American taxpayers and consumers hundreds of billions of dollars every year. We also have recommendations for smart, efficient public investments — in human development and to address climate change — that will have a positive monetary return for the government and society.” The letter also notes that appointing Weissman and Gilbert to DOGE would be an important step towards compliance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), which requires “the membership of the advisory committee to be fairly balanced in terms of the points of view represented and the functions to be performed by the advisory committee.” As things stand, DOGE’s membership falls far short of satisfying that requirement. You can read the letter in full here. To speak with Gilbert or Weissman, contact eleach@citizen.org.

- The Revolving Door Project Condemns Democrats’ Cowardice In The Face Of Trump’s Nominees by Newswire Editor (Common Dreams) on January 13, 2025 at 4:16 pm
The Revolving Door Project Executive Director, Jeff Hauser released the following statement:"The one constant within the Democratic Party is that its leaders will inevitably default to the belief that wisdom counsels caution. That is why it is unsurprising that Democrats are only offering more than perfunctory resistance to the few Trump nominees so brazenly offputting that they draw nearly uniform skepticism. For all the Trump nominees not accused of killing a dog or committing heinous crimes, Democrats do not seem poised to offer even a whisper of resistance, no matter how unqualified. For instance, Senate Democrats have failed to question how Scott Bessent’s experience of running a second tier hedge fund with declining assets under management* qualifies him to hold one of the most powerful economic policymaking in the world. Or how Chris Wright’s experience as an unhinged plutocrat out of touch with scientific reality would qualify him to manage some of the world’s most important laboratories. Joe Biden's degraded public communications capacity played an enormous role in the Party's past four years. While the Senate Democratic caucus is not exactly run by figures exuding vim and vigor, they should have learned from Biden's calamitously passive strategy. Yet there is no indication of a shift. By all accounts, Senate Democrats are seeking strategic retreat wherever possible, convinced that ‘opposition' is a bad strategy for the opposition party. Every senior Trump Administration official will have the discretion to exercise presidential authority on behalf of corporate interests in ways that will hurt ordinary Americans. Workers, consumers, breathers of air -- every typical American is at risk from the most corporate captured set of nominees in American history. Democrats should be telling this story now, not only to raise alarms ahead of the inauguration, but to be able to tell a compelling story about what went wrong and why when things inevitably decline across so many critical fronts in the next few years. Democrats do not have the votes to kill any of these nominations, but they do have the ability to begin drawing attention to the cronyism that will inevitably appear from within the Trump administration. Contrary to the party’s current position, being able to say ‘I told you so’ is helpful to future success. Donald Trump is no world bestriding electoral colossus -- even with substantial breaks, he has never received an outright majority of the vote and has generally been unpopular. Sadly, their latest defeat has left Democrats doubling down on an ostrich-like strategy of hiding their heads until Donald Trump goes away. But the MAGA movement will not go away on its own, it will have to be defeated. Defeating the MAGA movement does not require clever theories, it requires the hard work of opposition on behalf of the millions who will suffer at the hands of Trump's corporate cabinet. - Supreme Court Denies Big Oil Request to Review Climate Lawsuit by Newswire Editor (Common Dreams) on January 13, 2025 at 3:10 pm
The U.S. Supreme Court today denied fossil fuel industry requests to review a Hawai`i Supreme Court decision that allows Honolulu’s historic climate deception lawsuit against Big Oil companies to proceed toward trial. The ruling keeps Honolulu and other communities across the U.S. on track to put Big Oil companies on trial for lying to the public about their role in the climate crisis. This marks the fourth time since 2023 that the justices declined to consider an appeal from Big Oil companies in the growing number of state and local climate deception lawsuits they face. The U.S. Justice Department had urged the justices to deny Big Oil’s request to consider the Honolulu case. Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity, released the following statement: “Big Oil companies keep fighting a losing battle to avoid standing trial for their climate lies. With this latest denial, the fossil fuel industry’s worst nightmare — having to face the overwhelming evidence of their decades of calculated climate deception — is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Communities everywhere are paying dearly for the massive damages caused by Big Oil’s decades-long climate deception. The people of Honolulu and communities across the country deserve their day in court to hold these companies accountable.” Background on City and County of Honolulu v. Sunoco, et al.Honolulu’s lawsuit, City and County of Honolulu v. Sunoco, et al., seeks to make major oil and gas companies — including ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and BP — pay for the costs of local climate damages caused by the companies’ decades-long campaign of deception about the dangers of their fossil fuel products. Oil companies had asked the justices to review a ruling from the Hawai`i Supreme Court that found the federal Clean Air Act does not preempt state law claims to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their deceptive conduct. The fossil fuel industry and its backers have run a widespread media campaign in an attempt to influence the court to take the case. Justice Alito recused himself from the case. In a brief urging the Supreme Court to reject Big Oil’s petition, the Justice Department agreed with the Hawai`i Supreme Court that “the Clean Air Act does not categorically preempt respondents’ claims” in part because Honolulu’s claims “target only the [fossil fuel] products’ deceptive marketing.”Background on U.S. Climate Accountability Lawsuits Against Big Oil: Eleven attorneys general — in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico — and dozens of city, county, and tribal governments in California, Colorado, Hawai`i, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington, and Puerto Rico, have filed lawsuits to hold major oil and gas companies accountable for deceiving the public about their products’ role in climate change. These cases collectively represent more than 1 in 4 people living in the United States. Last year the attorney general of Michigan announced plans to take fossil fuel companies to court.

- Over 25,000 Scientists, Science Supporters and 28 Organizations that Support Scientific Integrity... by Newswire Editor (Common Dreams) on January 13, 2025 at 12:26 pm
Scientists are urging members of Congress to use their legislative power to defend science, fact-based policymaking and bedrock science-based policies that protect the public health and well-being of all people. Today, in the face of the incoming president's agenda, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) sent a petition signed by 25,219 scientists, experts and science supporters to every member of Congress asking them to stand up against attempts to politicize, eliminate or diminish scientific roles, agencies and federal research. At the same time, a coalition of 28 organizations that support scientific integrity sent an open letter to 99 U.S. Senators, some who will play a significant role in the confirmation of federal agency nominees. The letter asked them to ensure nominees are only confirmed if they have the necessary qualifications to succeed in their roles, do not have conflicts of interest, accept established science related to their agency’s mission and value the role of rigorous science, free from political interference, in government decision making. Federal scientists assess the safety of medicines, help communities more effectively recover from natural disasters, ensure our air is clean and our water drinkable, and so much more.In the first Trump administration, UCS documented more than 200 attacks on science by the administration with serious consequences, including using faulty science to justify restrictions on birth control, dangerous pollutants associated with lung damage, birth defects and death, and shutting down studies examining how common chemicals impact children. Looking ahead to the next four years, President-elect Trump has vowed to fire scientists, throw out science-based policies, dismantle scientific agencies and, slash policies that protect scientific research from censorship and suppression. “Rolling back science-based policies and silencing scientists has the potential to turn back the clock on the immense progress science has made over past decades, jeopardizing public health, economic stability, national security, and the future livability of the climate,” said Dr. Jennifer Jones, director of UCS’ Center for Science and Democracy. That’s why 99 organizations and 25,219 scientists and science supporters came together to ask Congress to defend against Trump’s anti-science actions. “Protecting science means protecting people—full stop,” said Jones. “The broad consensus among scientists demonstrates the urgency we all feel to protect independent science in government decision making.”In addition, UCS and the 99 organizations urge policymakers and the public to stand with scientists in their demand that the Trump administration respect facts and create policies that tackle climate change, invest in research and protect all communities.
